MEET WENDY
I’m Wendy Shugar—a nature-based life coach, author, guide, artist, and speaker who believes healing doesn’t always happen by pushing harder. Sometimes it begins when we slow down, reconnect with ourselves, and listen to what life is asking of us.My own journey through grief, caregiving, estrangement, major life transitions, and personal reinvention has shaped the compassionate work I offer today. Through coaching, workshops, retreats, speaking, and writing, I help people find steadiness, rediscover what matters, and move forward with greater clarity, purpose, and hope.

WHAT NATURE TEACHES US ABOUT BEGINNING AGAINNature rarely rushes, yet it is always becoming.A tree does not apologize for losing its leaves. A trail does not disappear simply because it takes an unexpected turn. After a fire, storm, or long winter, the natural world does not try to return to exactly what it was before. It responds to what has happened and begins again from where it is.We often expect something different from ourselves. We believe a new beginning must be dramatic, a major decision, a perfect plan, or a sudden burst of confidence. We wait until we feel completely ready. We tell ourselves we should already know the way forward.Nature offers us another possibility.Beginning again can be quiet. It may look like taking one honest breath before answering. Stepping outside for ten minutes. Writing down what you need instead of pushing it aside. Choosing one small action that supports the life you want to create.Growth does not require you to erase what came before. The rings inside a tree remain. The broken branch becomes part of its shape. Everything that has happened to you can remain part of your story without having to determine every chapter that follows. If you are standing at the edge of change, you do not need to see the entire path. You only need enough clarity for the next true step.Today, find a place where you can notice something growing a tree, a plant, moss between stones, or even a weed pushing through a crack. Pause and ask yourself:What am I ready to begin again, gently?Do not force an answer. Let the question stay with you. Your next step does not need to be large to be meaningful.Nature reminds us that becoming is not a single moment. It is a relationship with change one season, one choice, and one honest step at a time.— Wendy Shugar
NatureHeals® with Wendy
“Even in the longest night, your light is not lost it’s simply gathering strength for dawn.”
Wendy ShugarThere’s a quiet beauty during this time of year when the days grow short and the world slows into stillness. Nature retreats not out of fear, but out of wisdom. The trees rest. The rivers soften. The air hushes into a sacred pause. It’s an invitation for reflection, for gentle healing, for rediscovering the light that lives within you.The holiday season can stir many emotions joy, nostalgia, loneliness, and hope. It’s easy to lose ourselves in the swirl of activity, forgetting that light isn’t something we chase outside of ourselves, it’s something we tend from within.Being “light within the season” means honoring both the brightness and the shadow. It means allowing yourself to feel deeply, to rest fully, and to nurture the quiet spaces of your heart. Because real wellness the kind that sustains begins when we stop running and start listening.Research shows that exposure to natural light, even on cloudy days, increases serotonin and stabilizes our mood. But nature offers something even more profound than science can measure it offers reflection. When you step outside and see the low sun glint through bare branches or the mist rise from a frosted field, something in you exhales. You remember that cycles are sacred. That darkness is not absence, but preparation. Here’s a practice to carry through the season:
Each morning, before you open your phone or start your day, step outside. Breathe in the cold air. Feel the temperature on your skin. Whisper three words you want to embody today, maybe peace, patience, gratitude. Let those words become your light. At night, light a candle or sit near a window. Reflect on one thing that brought warmth to your day a conversation, a memory, a quiet victory. Gratitude becomes your lantern, no matter how dark the world feels.Light is not a feeling that comes and goes. It’s a state of being you can return to through mindfulness, through connection, through breath. The more you slow down and align with nature’s rhythm, the more radiant your energy becomes. You don’t have to be the brightest. You just have to be present. You just have to keep glowing in your own way.So, as winter deepens, remember your light has never left you. It’s there, waiting to be seen, waiting to guide you forward.Step outside. Feel the air. Trust the rhythm of your own heartbeat. You are light steady, gentle, and enduring.Wendy Shugar
NatureHeals®
Winter has a way of inviting us inward softly, like a gentle tap on the heart. Reality is it seems like the world gets louder, faster, and more intense. But….What would happen if you changed your mindset a little to let in what should be the case, what is the case for Nature… the world gets quieter, the pace slows, and suddenly we could feel that familiar pull toward what matters most: connection, gratitude, giving, and the healing rhythm of nature. And this is exactly where Winter Wellness begins. At the center of this practice for me is the belief that NatureHeals® is more than a concept, it’s a lifestyle and a reminder. When the cold season arrives, we don’t lose nature’s benefits; we simply experience them differently. The trails turn softer. The air feels sharp but clean. The trees stand still yet powerful. And every breath seems fuller when you take it outside.Nature regulates us without needing permission. You step out your door, feel the crisp air on your cheeks, and your body responds: your shoulders drop, your jaw unclenches, your lungs remember their job again. That’s the magic of stepping into the natural world, big moments are not required. One walk will do. One breath. One pause. One step that says: I choose healing today. Then there’s family, the one you’re born into or the one you lovingly collect over time. Maybe it looks like soup simmering on the stove while everyone talks at once, hands waving, stories spilling over each other like paint splatter on a studio floor. Maybe it’s a cozy corner on the couch with your favorite humans laughing until someone snorts and it becomes a core memory. Maybe your people don’t share your last name at all and that’s okay! The family you choose is often the softest place you land.Winter gives us an excuse to gather, but togetherness doesn’t actually need one. Hikes become slower adventures. Kayaking stories turn into “remember that one time…” with exaggerated sound effects and reenactments. Creativity shifts from speed to savoring. This season invites us to make memories, not masterpieces. And speaking of masterpieces… winter has a way of revealing that people are the point. The art, the creation, the beauty, those are the expression, but the togetherness is the soul of it.Now let’s talk about giving. There’s something so ridiculously good about doing something nice for someone else. Not a big Instagram worthy gesture, just a real-life human moment like paying for someone’s coffee, holding the door with an extra flourish, or complimenting someone’s art out loud where they can actually hear the pride in your voice.Generosity is contagious and the best part? Smiles cost nothing yet carry a lifetime return of energy. You share one, and it multiplies like French bread in a food processor (I swear it puffs up when you chop it). That smile might go to a stranger today but become somebody’s story tomorrow. It’s a tiny spark of warmth passed hand to hand like a community peace pole painted by all who touch it.Winter Wellness doesn’t start when you feel perfect or healed or organized. It starts with a moment of awareness that says: I can choose joy here too. Even now. Even in the cold.Nature holds you.
Your people hold you.
And giving holds you because kindness feeds the giver just as much as the receiver. So go ahead:choose the trail
choose your humans
choose kindness
and please, for the love of legacy… choose joy
Because that is where Winter Wellness Begins.“In winter’s stillness, kindness grows louder than the cold ever could.” – Wendy Shugar ✦
